Arts Catalyst commissions art that experimentally and critically engages with science. We produce provocative, and risk-taking projects to spark dynamic conversations about our changing world.
Arts Catalyst is one of the UK’s most distinctive arts organisations, distinguished by ambitious art commissions and its unique take on art-science practice. The organisation’s primary focus is commissioning new artists’ projects, presented in a range of museums, art galleries and other public spaces in the UK and internationally. In its 22 years of activity, Arts Catalyst has commissioned more than 140 artists’ projects, including major new works by Tomas Saraceno, Aleksandra Mir, Critical Art Ensemble, Jan Fabre, Yuri Leiderman, Stefan Gec, Otolith Group, Beatriz da Costa, Kira O’Reilly and Marko Peljhan, and has co-produced numerous exhibitions, events, performances and publications. Arts Catalyst plays a leading role in the development of artists’ engagement with science, and critical discourse around this field.
In January 2016 Arts Catalyst opened its Centre for Art, Science and Technology in the King’s Cross Area.
In her lecture, Santomauro will present the curatorial approach that Arts Catalyst has been developing by working in between disciplines and situated knowledge. She will encompass some recent projects, including ‘Wrecked on The Intertidal Zone’ – a project about the changing ecology, society and industry of the Thames estuary –, and Test Sites – a series of inquiries into matters of concern connected with environmental change.

Anna Santomauro joined Arts Catalyst in May 2017 as Programme Curator. She is curator, educator and researcher in micro-politics and socially engaged art. In 2011, Santomauro co-founded Vessel in Bari, Italy, a non-profit arts organisation dedicated to public programming in relation to contemporary social, political, and economic issues. In 2015-2016, Santomauro was ESP and Public Programmer at Eastside Projects (Birmingham). In 2017–18 she was curator in residence at Grand Union (Birmingham), where she co-curated the public programme Voz Rara. She has developed several projects and curated multiple exhibitions such as The Pacifist Library – Sarajevo, a project by Valentina Curandi and Nathaniel Katz (2013); Giant Step, a collaboration between Vessel and the Van Abbemuseum, Mostyn Gallery, and Galeria Labirynt (2012); For an Ecology of the Museum at the Museum of Villa Croce in Genoa, Italy (2012); Work in the Field, a radio program part of Pablo Helguera’s project Aelia Media in Bologna, Italy (2011). In 2013, Santomauro was one of the recipients of ICI/Dedalus Research Award. She attended several curatorial courses such as GBICC 2012 organized by the Gwangju Biennial, ICA Summer Seminar in Yerevan (Armenia), ICI – Independent Curators International Seminar in Istanbul, and is member of IKT. She has lectured, given talks, tutored and led workshops in several institutions, including: CCS Bard College (NYC), Piet Zwart Institute (Rotterdam), Newcastle University, Salt Galata (Istanbul), University of Cambridge, La Casa Encendida (Madrid). She is PhD candidate at the University of Wolverhampton (UK).
