It is a gathering of shorts I carried out between 2009 and 2014 and manipulated footage.
Much of the material was filmed in cities where I lived during those years, and part of it was acquired at the Los Encantes market, in the city of Barcelona. During editing, the material has been operated on to generate a rewriting that offers to transform the selected footage into a patchwork of alternate scenes. By generating a metamorphosis, the handling of the material becomes a criminal act in which you can judge veritable formal murders carried out on the emulsion through which the light of the projector is filtered. This task of mechanical concentration will also highlight the chemical and organic processes that make up a film reel and its permeability and mutability to the agents of time.
The film does not tell a rigorous story but rather, disjointed fragments of other stories, wishes lost in the past, lapses of time like the blink of an eye. A family on holidays appears before a camera, recording memories, a wandering bride is diluted between cyan and magenta, mutant scenes by the seaside, the changing nature of the seasons, allegories of a youthful dream, flashing city streets, nostalgic or expectant women. The experience may be ephemeral, but it is far from superficial; despite the reluctance of lazy blinking, these images impact our retinas and, before we know it, we find ourselves in a journey with many possible and varying interpretations. We are flooded with a feeling of nostalgia, blended with the evocation of a lost dream that is projected for us and in which we sense a possible evanescent revelation.
Natalia Lucía has received formal academic training in drama and stage direction, and she has put on theatrical representations in alternative spaces, with pieces that included visual devices. Over the years, her focus has shifted towards audio-visual filmmaking and film; likewise, photography has been a constant throughout the development of her entire work. She focuses on connecting different creative languages into a possible and genuine narrative by using domestic environments and telling her own stories and those of others, fiction, adventures on remote journeys, collages of textures and formats, in order to catch the attention of curious and active audiences. Her films have been selected and screened in exhibitions and festivals including L’Alternativa Festival de Cine Independiente de Barcelona,Curitiba International Film Festival de Super 8 and the Mostra de Films de Dones, among others.
Gabriel Millán is a musician and composer, the founder of the Barcelona-based Etermortifera experimental music project and a former member of the Snorkel Quintet improvisation ensemble. He has worked with composer Owen Kilfeather, poet Jaume Muñoz and the Live Coding Tolap Barcelona collective. He teaches entry-level sound design workshops with Pure Data and Arduino, and he has independently edited a number of albums and organised concert cycles with support from Convent Sant Agustí, showcasing experimental music against the backdrop of the chapels and the great hall of the former convent. Gabriel and the musical phenomenon interact as in a dance, joined together like pieces in constant movement, through direct contact, through attraction. As pieces of potential puzzles, limited in shape, undetermined in their combinations, set on a chessboard in a single, faceless end: sound. An imprint, a solid skeleton garbed in various smocks: oscillators, guitars, synthesisers, the human voice.
