In A BIG YEAR, Annika Kahrs engages with the legacy of ornithologist Ted Parker III (1953-1993), whose extraordinary hearing enabled him to identify over 4,000 bird species by their song alone – a talent that left a lasting mark on ornithology and fundamentally changed the way that birds are documented and understood. Kahrs draws on original recordings from the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, including clips of Parker’s own voice – fragile traces of his life devoted to sound, and imbued with a quiet kind of poetics – exploring how scientific listening, collective perception, and translation intertwine, and how Parker’s passion for sound is inextricably linked to broader questions of memory, transience, and the ephemerality of the archive. How can humans connect with nature, with the unknown – and perhaps with themselves – through sound, and through voice as a medium sited between proximity and distance?

En 2022, Kahrs participará en la 16e Biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon, que abre en septiembre de 2022, y en la actualidad está desarrollando dos exposiciones en solitario para el 2023 en la Nassauischer Kunstverein de Wiesbaden y la Schering Foundation en Berlín.
Su instalación multimedia «how to live in the echo of other places» se inauguró en junio de 2022 en Hamburgo, que fue diseñada por ella y comisariada por Ellen Blumenstein e Imagine the City e.V. Kahrs ha recibido numerosos galardones y becas y sus obras forman parte de colecciones privadas e institucionales entre las cuales figuran la Hamburger Kunsthalle (Alemania) o ARTER Collection (Turquía).

The video and sound installation Our Solo experiments with mixing the perception of music in a classical concert hall and of music played in a private setting. Four professional musicians are seen, who seemingly enter into a dialogue across physical distances. Three of these musicians play alone in their private homes, to practice pieces of music and melodies, and improvise individual fragments of sound. Their music seems to transcend through the walls of an empty concert hall, and onto the stage of an opera singer. Different melodies emerge and invite her directly to interact with these domestic performances and intimate moments.

The work was originally commissioned by BNKR – current reflections on art and architecture, Munich on occasion of the exhibition ‘’The Architecture of Confinement“ curated by Till Fellrath and Sam Bardaouil.

The Videoart at Midnight Editions series is the result of a discussion with leading experts in the field of timebased media art regarding the conventional art market practice of limitation vs. the artist’s and public’s interest in visibility and representation in a broader range of collections. Hence, the Videoart at Midnight Editions series both addresses the wish of artists and collections for copyright and quality control of art works, and the need of doing justice to an endlessly reproducible medium and affordable
prices. Together with chosen artists who have been featured in the Videoart at Midnight screenings at Berlin’s Babylon film theatre in recent years, an outstanding work from their oeuvre—film or installation—is exclusively selected or newly produced. The work is published in an edition of 40 copies and is solely available in this series.
