Reflected on the eye that looks, a famous sequence of the silent short film about realist “an Andalusian dog” directed by Luis Bunuel in 1929 is repeated incessantly.
Estefanía Peñafiel Loaiza works like an archaeologist. She is interested not in what is visible in an image, but in what is behind it. To leave a trace, to mark something, so many gestures which interest the artist. The trace is thus constantly linked to the memory. Estefania Peñafiel Loaiza teaches us that the memory is not the one of the monuments, and of the commemorations, but the one that does not enter the books of history, that whispers itself to the ear. Creating is above all a political act. And yet, it is not a question here of a pamphleteer art which would treat in a literal way subjects of current events. The art must transform the events by taking distance. Ethics, not morality, constantly underlies his work (…). These works can address the collective in order to better return to intimate notions.
