Among them, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané presents his video ‘A Dream Dreaming A Dream’ (2020) with gallery Esther Schipper (Berlin). A Dream Dreaming A Dream is an online infinitely self-generating animation of a dreaming panther walking through a forest. In this conversation with curator Soledad Gutiérrez, Head Curator at TBA21-Thyssen Bornemisza, the artist will unfold the research behind the work and open up the conversation to broader concerns. This work is inspired by indigenous peoples’ perceptions of the forest and of the entities that inhabit it beyond the human: the divine characters of animals, rivers, plants, as well as the xapiris, the shamanic master spirits of the Yanomami people of Brazil. A Dream Dreaming a Dream Dreaming layers different forms of knowledge and knowing—indigenous wisdom, the images and sensations of sleep, and the artificial intelligence of a computer processor—and calls for new ways of being in the world.

Soledad Gutiérrez Rodríguez is part of the curatorial team of TBA21 and is Executive Producer of st_age. She has been working in the arts for the last twenty years, occupying different positions in various institutions from the Guggenheim Bilbao, to the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), and the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Most recently, she was the Director of CentroCentro in Madrid, where she developed a program based on contemporary artistic practice and collective learning. Her research deals with cooperative practices and the immaterial potential of art realized through performance and collective processes.

Daniel Steegmann Mangrané

Born and educated in Barcelona, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané now lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. He is part of the generation of artists that began their production at the beginning of this century. The artists’ varied techniques and media include film, sound, drawing, kaleidoscopic collages, photography, sculpture and gardens. Nature is a constant in his work, which explores the contamination and affinity of forms that exist between nature, art and architecture. Concerned with the global ecological crisis, he believes that any change in the natural environment also modifies our own nature. Both in his sculptures, which are extremely fragile and incorporate altered organic material, and in his filmic work, the artist experiments with the correspondences between organic and geometric forms, and with the complex network of dependencies between natural order and the order created by human beings.

He has participated in biennials and triennials in Lyon, Berlin, New York, Paris, Porto Alegre and São Paulo, among others. His work is included in the collections of Tate Modern, London; Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, Museu Serralves, Porto; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Castilla y León; Fundació “la Caixa” and MACBA, Barcelona.
